We are very sad as we’ve lost the first miniature dachshund rescue we ever had.
We rescued Rocky, a 9 lb. red smooth miniature, from a boarding kennel in January 1996. Rocky was abandoned there because he had eating a pair of expensive Italian leather shoes. We had taken our Dalmatian mix, Huey, there because they would let Huey run with their horses whereas all the other kennels wanted to lock him up because he was too energetic. Rocky showed Huey immediately that he was the alpha male, in charge of everything in his own quiet way. He picked up Huey’s toy, sat on Huey’s doggie bed, and made Huey sit quietly in the corner.
Rocky had back surgery in 1999 after one of our other dachshund rescues ran into him while playing outside. We discovered that Rocky was a quite the candy-striper dog. At the vet clinic and animal hospital, Rocky would go into the rooms to check on all the sick puppies, kitties, and even the bunnies. He loved everyone and was quick to make you his newest friend.
Most recently, Rocky participated in the 2008 WEENIES ON PARADE, Waterloo, Wisconsin and the 1st Annual Madison Area Dachshunds Group Halloweenie Party, Madison, Wisconsin.
Rocky suffered a catastrophic seizure in the early morning hours of Thursday, November 22, 2008. Although the seizure caused acute blindness, it looked like Rocky was going to recover, then in the early morning hours of Monday, November 24, 2008; Rocky suffered another catastrophic seizure which caused full body paralysis. At 8 a.m. Monday, November 24, 2008, we humanely had Rocky euthanized by our local vet.
Rocky’s physical final resting place is under the Walnut trees next to his long-time companion, Huey, our Dalmatian mix.
We hope that Rocky’s spirit has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge to join his companions, Huey a Dalmatian mix, and Chocolate Chip, a chocolate smooth tweenie, and all his other friends who went before him.
Rocky is free to run, roll in the grass, work on his tan in the sunshine, sniff out the mice, chase the bees, crunch the June bugs, bark at the airplanes, and chew on all the expensive Italian leather shoes he can find.
Our hearts are very sad but our minds are glad to have known and had the chance to love him.
Rest now, little man. Thank you for a wonderful life.

I was pleased to have met Rocky–he was a real gentleman. He is missed by all who knew him. Deb and Chris gsve him many excellent years in a warm and loving doxie home–I know he was happy every single day with them.

I can only imagine how heartbroken you must be. He was sure a cutie and it sounds like he was dearly loved!
I’m so sorry for your loss… he looks like a WONDERFUL doxie and I know you miss him terribly. Hugs!
What an adorable little guy. My heart breaks with you. I’m going to hug my little weens a little tighter today.
My heart goes out to you. I know that you’re missing your Rocky. They leave such an pawprint on our hearts.
I lost my little Kato a month before, on October 22 2008. He had to be put to sleep, because he suffered congestive heart failure. He was a darling, and always there for a snuggle and that look.
Perhaps Rocky will see a black and tan smooth running around up there by the Rainbow Bridge.
They should hook up, because Kato is probably getting very well fed by my great grandmother.
Shared tears,and shared smiles too.
